"We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you.
Because by your holy cross and resurrection,
you have redeemed the world."

Many of us Christians know that Jesus Christ suffered for us. Many of us would connect these sufferings of Jesus to a gruesome kind of pain. Many of us would also connect this to the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary like the agony in the garden, the scourging at the pillar, and the crowning of thorns. But beyond this, Jesus suffered not only physically but also emotionally, yet He did not fight back and continued to show love for His enemies; Jesus sacrificed his life for us.
Let us read Matthew 27:27-31

The Gospel of The Lord
The Suffering of Jesus Christ
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. 28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head. 31 After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

A quick look at the gospel

This Gospel reading shows that Jesus felt both physical and emotional pain. Physical pain in a sense that the crown of thorns was put on top of His head. He was also beaten up on the head. Emotional pain in a sense that Jesus was stripped. No one not, even during the time of Jesus, would want themselves to be stripped and mocked. They made fun of Him of Him saying that He was the King of the Jesus, which in contrast meant that, they did not believe that Jesus was the King of the Jews. The amazing thing about Jesus is that He did not fight back. When the Roman soldiers mocked Him, He could have unleashed His powers to prove that He is truly the King of the Jews but He did not. Honestly, if I were in Jesus’ position, I would have gotten so angry that I would have used my power to inflict pain on them so that they would feel the pain that I was enduring and realize that I was truly the son of God.
In addition, Jesus even mentions when He was nailed to the cross, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." This line shows a great character by Jesus because even if the soldiers tortured Him, He did not fight back. He even forgave them. Moreover, Jesus’ suffered not because He committed a grave crime. Jesus was innocent; he did not commit any sin that would result to this suffering.

One of the sentences that students would usually write in their test papers would be, “Jesus suffered for our sins.” But what does it really mean? Jesus suffering for our sins means that Jesus suffered because of our human sinfulness. Human sin means the failure to bother to love. For example, when one fights another student. The person committed a sin because that person did not show love and care to the other person.
Jesus is our role model and guide who showed us a way to overcome sin. His suffering is the ultimate manifestation of His love for us. He loved us so much that He was willing to suffer for us; he sacrificed His life for us. He was willing to go into a “struggle” where he would be mocked and tortured as shown in the Gospel reading. Jesus’ suffering is the definition of true love. Thus, we could say that, the ultimate way to fight against evil is to show LOVE.
In our society today, not everyone are willing to sacrifice for someone. Teenagers nowadays would have numerous numbers of “ex-boyfriend”s or “ex-girlfriend”s. It is because teenagers are not willing to sacrifice something in their life for the love of their boyfriend or girlfriend. When they encounter difficulties in their relationship, not all of them are willing to take the extra step to overcome this difficulty. Most often, they would just separate or break their relationship. This just shows that they do not truly love that person because if they really love that person, then they would have sacrificed something, even something really valuable or precious in their life, just for that person. Sadly, only a few are able to sustain their relationships.
